Maine Section Standing Committees

Below is a list of Maine Section ASCE committees and a brief description of what they do.
If you are interested in getting involved with these committees, please contact the appropriate
committee member below or any Board Member.

Awards Committee
The Awards Committee is responsible for collecting and evaluating the awards presented each year including the Engineer of the Year and Younger Engineer of the Year.     See the description for the Awards Page

Membership Committee

This Committee is responsible for promoting membership in the Maine Section.

Program Committee

This Committee is responsible for planning, preparation, and logistics for the public meetings of the Section.

History and Heritage

The Committee reviews engineering projects for historical significance and recognition, as well as prepares nominations for historical projects for Section, State and Federal recognition.  Click here for some examples of our Engineering Landmarks

Scholarship

Works with the University of Maine and the Maine Section Executive Board to share information and to suggest donations to existing scholarships at U. Maine when Section funds are available. Coordinates and awards the Maine Section ASCE High School Senior Scholarship for any Maine resident interested in a civil engineering career and registering for civil engineering classes in the fall at ANY university.  Answers questions from interested students and directs them to additional scholarship resources, i.e. ASCE National Scholarships, University of Maine, etc... Timeline of events: Scholarship notices mailed in October. Deadline is January of each calendar year. Final judging done in the spring.

Technical Seminar

This Committee organizes our annual Technical Seminar on varying subjects that pertain to the current civil engineering industry here in Maine and beyond. Local experiences are often highlighted or technical short courses are offered. The Committee is responsible for selecting the seminar topic in conjunction with the Board. Transportation Conference

The Transportation Conference is sponsored by the Maine Section of ASCE, Maine Department of Transportation, and the Maine Better Transportation Association. The conference provides individual and panel presentations on various policy and technical aspects relating to the theme of Transportation.

Younger Members

This committee promotes younger members, defined as a members who have a bachelors degree or above and who are less then 35 within ASCE (There are over 180 Younger Members in the Maine Section). This committee provides programs that provide opportunities to network with peers, learn more about the profession, provide recognition and encourage the full professional development of Younger Members. Public Relations

The Public Relations Committee strives to establish and improve the general public’s acknowledgement and positive perception of Civil Engineering in Maine.  The Committee will pursue activities such as volunteer community service, charity events including the A/E Golf Tourney, educational outreach in local schools and events like National E-week, and creation and distribution of press releases regarding general Section events and news.

Legislative Affairs

The Legislative Affairs committee reports on the current Legislative issues that are in Augusta in front of the House of Representatives and Senate.

DEP Task Force

The Maine Section actively participates in a task force with the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and other professional organizations whose members provide services to clients in response to DEP regulatory, permit, and other requirements.  Click here for more information

Golf Tournament Committee

The Maine Section ASCE sponsors an annual golf tournament with the proceeds funding scholarships and charities selected by the winning teams.  As of 2008, this event has been active for 16 years and has raised over $70,000 for local charities and scholarships.

Committee on Diversity

Formed in March 2007, the Committee on Diversity is to focus on minorities in Civil Engineering in Maine.  The committee goals are to:
  • compare the status of women and minorities in Civil Engineering in Maine to the rest of the working population,
  • compare established issues at both UMaine Civil Engineering program and at Maine DOT,
  • review current ASCE diversity programs and activities, 
  • assure that ASCE is representing Civil Engineering in the best light and making attractive to all individuals and age groups
  • work with other groups, agencies or associations with similar goals to promote Civil Engineering as a career choice for women and minorities.

University of Maine Student Chapter - Student Advisor/Practioner

The Student Advisor Committee is our liaison with the University of Maine ASCE Student Chapter.  The Committee fosters relations with the students, coordinates special programs such as our Job Shadow program, and advises and guides students.
