Engineers rock!
The Maine Engineering Promotion Council, through the support of ASCE's Maine
Section and other sponsors, has developed an annual program to attract the
best and brightest youth toward careers in the engineering profession. This
year MEPC produced the "Engineerz!" rock-video television commercial
and a companion radio spot that ran statewide in the weeks leading up to the
Engineers Week Expo. The TV commercial and radio version recognized the
support of ASCE. View and hear the commercials at the
MEPC Web site: .
The TV ad has also been posted on
YouTube and has been viewed by nearly
11,000 visitors.

ASCE HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIPS
The Maine
Section is seeking applicants for its Civil Engineering High School
Scholarship. There will be two $2,000 scholarships awarded to two
outstanding high school seniors from Maine who plan to major in civil
engineering in college. This scholarship has been highly successful in past
years and typically attracts many students who are in the top 5% of their
graduating class. The application must be postmarked by January 31, 2008.

- Another Maine Section Younger Member Forum sponsored event!
Nationally, Rebuilding Together
has more than 250 chapters. This year, the organization will mobilize about
275,000 volunteers to perform work at 8,700 homes. The work was valued at
approximately $84 million. The Maine Section of ASCE is mobilizing
volunteers to make an impact on our community.

- March 2007, New Committee Formed - Committee on Diversity.
The Maine Section has formed a new committee, the Committee on Diversity
chaired by Jennifer Paul, which is to focus on minorities in Civil
Engineering in Maine. The committee goals are to:
- compare the status of women and minorities in Civil Engineering in Maine
to the rest of the working population,
- review established procedures at both the UMaine Civil Engineering
program and at the MaineDOT,
- review current ASCE diversity programs and activities,
- assure that ASCE is representing Civil Engineering in the best light and
making the profession attractive to all individuals, and
- work with other groups, agencies, or associations with similar goals to
promote Civil Engineering as a career choice for women and minorities.
