• From ASCE National  04/07/2010 - The Committee on Employment of Civil Engineers (CECE) needs your help to identify the current and future employment issues that are paramount to our profession. Please take our brief survey online at http://www.zoomerang.com/Survey/WEB22AG44CMEA8. CECE plans to issue this survey every six months in order to identify trends, and will use the results of this survey to guide and focus future efforts addressed by the committee. The survey results will be made available through ASCE's web site and publications.
  The survey should take less than 10 minutes to complete and all responses will be kept confidential. Please contact ASCE staff member Becky Waldrup, at 703-295-6281 or rwaldrup@asce.org if you would like additional information or have any questions about the survey or the commitee's work.  This survey will be active until May 5, 2010.
   
• The Portland Area Comprehensive Transportation System (PACTS) is the Metropolitan Planning Organization for the Portland, Maine region. It was established to improve the coordination of transportation planning and investment decisions by state, municipal and public transportation organizations. • April 1, 2010 - The Structural Engineers Association of Maine (SEAM) is hosting a an evening seminar to be put on by Mr. Erik Nelson, P.E., of Structures Workshop.   The ASCE Maine Section is seeking applicants for its Civil Engineering High School Scholarship. There will be two $2000 scholarships awarded to two outstanding high school seniors from Maine who plan to major in civil engineering in college. This scholarship has been highly successful in past years and typically attracts many students who are in the top 5% of graduating class. • Maine Section Meeting September 17, 2009 at Verillo's in Portland.   Please join us at Verillo's in Portland for a presentation on the The Long Creek Restoration Project.   The Project is a collaborative, community-based initiative and has been active since 2007 to develop a coordinated watershed restoration plan that will bring the stream back into compliance with state and federal water quality standards, and to open up new recreation opportunities for local residents and visitors.  Our presentation will feature a discussion of the watershed, the issues, the Initiative, potential solutions, and a presentation on one ongoing solution at the Maine Mall using porous pavement treatments.  More >
   
• Wednesday, September 9, 2009 - The Maine Association of Professional Soil Scientists, in conjunction with the Maine Association of Wetland Scientists, the Maine Association of Site Evaluators, the Society of Soil Scientists of Northern New England and the Maine Forest Service is pleased to announce a workshop which focuses on wetland delineation and identification at Reid State Park in Georgetown, Maine. The workshop includes a hands-on field exercise as well as a group discussion at the conclusion of the field exercise. The primary focus of this workshop is to compare actual wetland delineations and identifications done using methods and protocol accepted by State and Federal Regulators today (based primarily on the 1987 Army Corps of Engineers 1987 Wetland Manual and Field Indicators for Identifying Hydric Soils in New England) to those done using the Draft Interim Regional Supplement to the Corps of Engineers Wetland Delineation Manual: Northcentral and Northeast Region (which uses Field Indicators of Hydric Soils in the United States and includes 4 categories for determining wetland hydrology).  More information   Registration information

  The Maine Engineering Promotion Council, through the support of ASCE's Maine Section and other sponsors, has developed an annual program to attract the best and brightest youth toward careers in the engineering profession. This year MEPC produced the "Engineerz!" rock-video television commercial and a companion radio spot that ran statewide in the weeks leading up to the Engineers Week Expo. • March 2007, New Committee Formed - Committee on Diversity.   The Maine Section has formed a new committee, the Committee on Diversity chaired by Jennifer Paul, which is to focus on minorities in Civil Engineering in Maine.  The committee goals are to:
  • compare the status of women and minorities in Civil Engineering in Maine to the rest of the working population,
  • review established procedures at both the UMaine Civil Engineering program and at the MaineDOT,
  • review current ASCE diversity programs and activities, 
  • assure that ASCE is representing Civil Engineering in the best light and making the profession attractive to all individuals, and
  • work with other groups, agencies, or associations with similar goals to promote Civil Engineering as a career choice for women and minorities.

Exact dates have not been finalized, but the team will be traveling from Paris to Agadez, near the site in Northern Niger, on Jan. 8 and returning on the 15th.  This project has been ongoing and a site assessment trip was made last year around the same time. The project includes constructing a rope and washer pump to be installed at a well that will be used to irrigate a school garden. This trip will consist of not only project implementation, but hopefully allow time for further discovery of needs that our chapter can pursue. Their goal is to establish a lasting relationship with the people of Niger.
  
  The ideal mentor would be a civil or environmental engineer with experience in low-tech mechanical pumps, powered by either wind or animal. • Feb 2006 - Maine Section Receives National Public Relations Award!  The Maine Section was awarded the 2005 State Public Relations Award from ASCE National for our Sections outstanding work associated with the 2005 Engineers Week campaign and sponsorship.  Maine was one of only two sections that received the award.  The Akron-Canton Section also received the award for their effort in releasing the regions' infrastructure "report card".  
  
  The ASCE Award Committee cited the remarkable success of the Maine Sections' effort to "raise awareness of the engineering profession and increase interest in engineering among school-age children".  The Committee also recognized the efforts to reach the public through advertising the events and helping to raise public awareness of Civil Engineering. 
  
  The award was presented to Section President Robert Chaput by ASCE president Bill Henry at the 2005 Civil Engineering Conference in LA in October.   Congratulations to Maine Section Secretary Erik Wiberg and those who worked on this award-winning effort. 
   
• February 26, 2006 - The Maine Section is pleased to announce the winners of the High School Student Model Contest for 2006\
   
• The University of Maine ASCE Student Chapter competed in the National Student Steel Bridge Competition  in May of 2006 in Salt Lake City. Of the 45 competing teams, they placed 29th overall; placing 15th in the "aesthetics" category, and 16th in the "stiffness" category. The University of Connecticut, the other Northeast Region representative at nationals placed 30th overall. • February 20 - March 29, 2007 - PE Review Course -  It's not too late to sign up!  A single site registration fee is charged, and an unlimited number of people can attend the web based course at a single site. To keep the individual costs low, the minimum participation for this course will be 10 people, with the maximum registration fee at $200 per person.  The deadline for registration is Friday, February 9. At this time, if fewer than 10 people have registered, the course will be canceled. If greater than 10 people have registered, the fee per person will be reduced – so let everyone know!!   Click here FMI
