Possible joint meeting with NH in October near Portsmouth, NH. Tim to coordinate with Jim Spaulding from NH Section.
Old Business:
Camp Scarborough-Walter Fagerlund gave an update. Bridge can’t be structurally repaired. Either replace in kind or do a lower level crossing at a shorter span. Preference of locals would be a replace in kind at the same span. Walter will talk to Tim Cote at HNTB regarding a rough cost estimate. Option of giving to Student Chapter was discussed, but was tabled for now based on summer break coming up.
Engineer of the Year, Younger Engineer of the Year: Phil Dunn has received one nomination each only. There was discussion on whether to continue the award program due to lack of nominations or combine with other memberships into a non-civil, general engineering award. Issue was tabled until summer planning meeting. Younger Engineer nomination of Ralph Norwood and Engineer of Jeff McEwen. General discussion on qualifications of both. Ralph only has write up from Mike Davies. Board voted to pass both nominations on for general voting.
New Business:
MCTCB (Maine Concrete Technicians Cert Board)
Reappointed Steve Cole to board as ASCE’s representative, Tim to send letter on ASCE letterhead to MCTCB indicating so.
2006 Cold Regions Conference: Cold Regions committee has asked for donation from Section. Bob will check with Phil on what is typical Section support above and beyond National sponsorship.
ASCE Re-governance, Tony Puntin: 35 members attended the meeting in Albany. National Board has too many members. Has been split up into Regions. New England, NY, NJ is Region 1. Regional formation team has been set up. Tony is New England representative for Maine, NH, VT. 13 people total on the team for Region 1. Each Region will have 6 people on the Regional Board (4 elected governors, 1 appointed governor, and 1 regional director). Board had discussion regarding the Maine Section’s lack of representation on the formation team. Concerns were expressed, but Tony assured the board that his concerns are the same, as NH is a small Section too. Sept. 10th, Saturday meeting in Albany, NY is next NE council meeting and the 11th will be a formation team meeting. Team has several assignments that are due by early fall and Regional re-governance should be finalized by late fall.
Board voted to allow MDOT-Bridge to have as many brochures as they wanted for the IBC Bridge Conference.
Board voted to not support a student chapter in Quebec for several reasons, but mainly we should focus on supporting the UMaine chapter.
