  1. Welcome and Introductions

      Quorum not initially present.  Began with Item 3 then returned to Item 2.

 

  1. Budget 2005-2005/Treasure’s Report/Meeting Minutes
    1. Budget 2005-2006.

                                                               i.      The board reviewed the proposed, revised 2005-2006 budget. 

                                                             ii.      Add Cold Regions Conference line item in receipts and disbursements for tracking. Include $6,000 for receipts and disbursements.

                                                            iii.      Add Younger Members Events line items to disbursements.

                                                           iv.      Chris to revise budget.  Vote on proposed budget tabled.

    2. Tim Merritt motioned to accept the August planning meeting minutes. Walter Fagerlund seconded the motion.  Unanimous vote to accept.
  1. Programs

October 27 – Bob Gerber to present on Maine Yankee decommissioning in Auburn (Hilton Garden Inn) or Lewiston (Ramada)

November – date, time, and place to be announced.

December – Tim looking into airport related topic. 

February – Tim considering Calais bridge crossing or Iraq infrastructure presentation.  Sea Dogs Restaurant is the tentative location.

March – Technical Seminar

April – UMaine student chapter

May 18 – Barry Sheff of Woodard & Curran might be available to present on Portland’s Ocean Gateway project.  Tim considering a harbor boat tour.

 

    1. Portland Observatory as National ASCE Historic Landmark

                                                               i.      Interest was initiated by the Observatory’s national historic landmark status

                                                             ii.      Tim distributed a write-up entitled “Lemuel Moody and the Portland Observatory.”  Lemuel Moody, a sea captain, commissioned construction of the observatory.  Tim and Peter Merfeld will research civil engineering components of the observatory and report back to the board.

    1. ASCE Historic Landmark projects

                                                               i.      Peter Merfeld previously mentioned dams.  Ralph Nelson mentioned an Amberson-type Dam in the Ellsworth Area.

 

  1. Committee Updates
    1. Informant/Webpage

                                                               i.      Patti Korbet introduced ASCE member Ralph Nelson.  Ralph has volunteered to maintain/update the Maine Section website. Ralph indicated he will be able to attend board meetings.

                                                             ii.      Website-only content should be sent directly to Ralph.

                                                            iii.       Informant material that may end up posted on the website should be sent to Patti or Walter.

    1. Younger Members – No report.  Red Sox event was successful, though seating was scattered.
    2. Model Contest

                                                               i.      Be Schonewald not present to report. 

                                                             ii.      Contest submissions due in February.  Open to all civil engineering works (not only historical).  Open to middle school and high school students.

                                                            iii.      Bob requested board members contact a minimum of two schools in their communities.

                                                           iv.      Pre-release announcement to go to guidance councilors and principals in October.

    1. Transportation Conference

                                                               i.      Bob Chaput indicated Transportation Conference topic under consideration include pavement design, concrete design, work zone safety.

    1. Technical Seminar

                                                               i.      Walter Fagerlund reviewed potential topics with Tim Merritt and Peter Merfeld.

                                                             ii.      Walter to contact Ramada Inn in Lewiston

                                                            iii.      Adam Meyer volunteered to assist Walter.

  1. Old Business
    1. ASCE Re-governance Zone 1 Meeting – Bob Chaput has received the proposed bylaws and will email to board members.  Send comments to Bob.  Bob will solicit and e-vote by October 15.
    2. Blodgett’s Welding Seminar

                                                               i.      Jeremy Bragg reported Blodgett now willing to come to Portland.  Looks like the seminar will be the 1st or 2nd week in April 2005

                                                             ii.      Schedule to avoid conflict with UMaine Student chapter meeting.
